Основана группа в 1977 году, в ее состав тогда входили Richard Butler (вокал), Tim Butler (бас-гитара), Duncan Kilburn (саксофон), Paul Wilson (ударные) и Roger Morris (гитара). Первоначально фигурировало 3 варианта названия группы: "Radio", "The Europeans" и "The Psychedelic Furs", остановились на последнем и стали репетировать.
